Day Three: Advent

For centuries the church has referred to the weeks leading up to Christmas Day as Advent, but most of us don't have a deep knowledge of Middle English-Medieval Latin based words.  For shame.  What did we even learn in school?

But, the word Advent (or advent) comes from the Latin for "arrival."  As this is just what Christmas is, it is about the arrival.

The most important arrival in human history.

The most important arrival in universal history.

What one theologian once called "the vertical moment".  The point where humanity's horizontal historical timeline was interrupted from above.  When a vertical arrival, God, entered into human flesh and entered into time.

This is the arrival.  This is the Advent.
